- Canva is free and is a fantastic way for newcomers to create their graphics. While not as advanced as Photoshop, it definitely does enough cool things for some people to reconsider a Photoshop subscription.
- GIMP is an open source graphics software – it doesn't cost a thing and it's a popular alternative to paying for Photoshop
- Krita is also free, I tried it once for five minutes, and then went back to my expensive Photoshop
- Serif Affinity Photo only costs 50 bucks and does a lot of things Photoshop can do. For the work I do, I'd even say that their brush tool is way better. I sometimes jump between Affinity and Photoshop. The only downside is, Photoshop lets me work with very large files, whereas Affinity can become very slow.
- Procreate is huge on the iPad, and I have seen many illustrators move to drawing straight their tablet.
- Sketchbook Pro used to have a price tag, but now they have made it free. Not sure why, but that's awfully decent of them. Their pencil tool is great for digital sketching (one would hope so, with that name of theirs)

I'm sure this gets asked a lot, but recently I have started to think about purchasing either Photoshop CS6, or the full CC. From what I understand you can pay $19 a month for just one app, or $49 for the whole bag. I am wondering if I will really use Photoshop enough to make this worthwhile.
Right now I use Aperture 3 for all of my organizing and majority of editing. I have Nik Software Complete package as plugins, along with PT Lens plugin since Aperture doesn't have distortion correction. I do color correction often, and use Curves adjustments in Aperture, or for some photos I'll open with either Viveza 2 or Color Efex Pro. I really like this setup, but I am wondering if Photoshop will open creative doors that I currently am unaware of. I enjoy post processing, and want to continue to improve at it. I feel a little bit like my current setup doesn't offer much in way of tutorials for how to do specific/unique things, whereas Photoshop has an entire world of training/options available.
I have never done any 'layer' based photo editing so it will certainly be a challenge learning, but one I'd be willing to take on. Are there others who have been in my situation, and did you find Photoshop worth it if you did indeed take the plunge?
